Shopping During the Lockdown: 5 Things You Need To Take Into Consideration
There’s no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on virtually every aspect of our lives. Whether you’ve lost your job, have been told to work remotely, or you’re vulnerable and are trying to protect yourself and your family, we’ve all had to make changes and sacrifices. One of those is avoiding crowded places like shopping malls, leading to a boom in ecommerce sales. But before you get started on your Black Friday and Christmas shopping on the internet, we have put together some considerations that you should make…
Your mailman will be super busy
First up, be mindful of the fact that your local mailman will be super busy, with delivery companies investing billions of dollars into expansion projects to help ease the pressure. It is frustrating when packages take longer to arrive than expected, but nothing is normal right now, so be patient and order any important gifts in advance to ensure they have plenty of time to come before Christmas. If you’re concerned, pay extra for express shipping instead.
Check for quality and craftsmanship
It’s easy to see something you like the look of online and buy it without really taking into account what it was made from and its overall quality. Do your research into each and every company you buy from and read their reviews, too. One great example of this is if you were to buy a Claddagh ring – the Claddagh Rings website promises that every product is made by hand in Ireland and is hallmarked at the historic Irish Assay Office at Dublin Castle. This adds an additional layer of confidence and ensures that you’re not buying cheap rubbish.
Review their returns policy before ordering
You can really get stung by companies if you don’t look at their returns policy before you order. When we buy from a physical store, we know that we can take it back if it doesn’t fit or we don’t like it, but things can become more complicated and expensive online. Some brands only offer refunds on faulty goods, whilst others will accept returns but expect you to pay for shipping and handling. Understand your rights should your product not be fit for use.
There’s a world outside of Amazon
We get it: it’s so easy to head to Amazon to buy products because they offer great prices and generous delivery options. But there’s a whole world outside of Amazon. Websites like Etsy and eBay are great, and you can find independent retailers on social media, too. Do some research and decide whether the brand you’re looking for has its own website; you’ll often find that companies list for cheaper when you buy from their direct sales channel.
Local businesses depend on you
Finally, try to support local businesses wherever you can. If shops are closed in your area or you’re avoiding busy places, see whether local businesses will deliver to you. Check out their website or give them a call – from fashion boutiques to restaurants, most businesses have adapted their offerings during the pandemic to maintain cashflow. Utilize the services available and keep more money in the local economy – Amazon and Apple have enough!
